Ruthie and I are participating in this year’s Israel Ride, cycling from Jerusalem to Eilat. We are asking for your support. The Israel Ride is a fundraiser sponsored by JNF that supports the Arava Institute, a research center whose mission is to provide the Middle East with a new generation of professionals that will meet the region’s environmental challenges. The ride also supports Hazon, an organization committed to a more environmentally sustainable world.
Asking people for money is just about the last thing Ruthie and I like to do, but we are passionate about Israel and also about solving the environmental challenges that confront us. If you are so inclined please make a donation. The links below give you more information about these two worthy causes. I have also included a brief description of a few of the Arava Institute programs for those interested in more detail.

Center for Sustainable Agriculture
The Center for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), directed by Dr. Elaine Solowey, is a vital player in the field of desert agriculture and sustainable agriculture in the Middle East and the world. The Center is dedicated to the investigation and preservation of arid lands and their natural resources, and works collaboratively with leading institutions.
Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation
Established in August 2008 and directed by Dr. Tareq Abu Hamed, the Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) is rapidly progressing to become Israel’s “Silicon Valley” in research, development, and technology of renewable energy. Leveraging the Arava Valley’s specific climatic conditions and the highest solar radiation levels, CREEC pioneers conduct research in a wide variety of subjects focusing on energy policy, solar fuels, photovoltaic technologies, biomass, wind and solar thermal energy, as well as innovative building construction techniques customized to conserve energy in desert climates.
Center for Transboundary Water Management
The Center for Transboundary Water Management, directed by Dr. Clive Lipchin, provides a platform for regional water professionals and policy makers to cooperate in water conservation, desalination, wastewater treatment and education. The Center facilitates direct communication among regional water professionals in the three lower riparian states of the Jordan River and Dead Sea Basin (Israel, Palestine and Jordan). The open dialogue that is made possible by the center enables the flow of data and, most importantly, establishes long-lasting relationships built on trust and integrity between those who are responsible for the sustainable management of the region’s fragile water resources.
