We did it!
My wife Robin and I just returned from an amazing trip where we participated in the Israel Ride, an event that maintains hope for coexistence and peace in the Middle east. We rode 350+ miles on our tandem bicycle from the city of Jerusalem to the Mediterranean Sea, parallel to Gaza, Egypt, the West Bank, through the Negev desert, and finally arrived in the city of Eilat. The desert was an adventure -- we encountered a huge tumbleweed storm and had a near-collision with wild donkeys! We navigated remarkably steep descents at Mizpe Ramon around the Makhtesh (large crater) where we hit all-time high speeds. As we rode, we met lots of interesting folks and created new friendships. Upon reaching Eilat, we proudly held our tandem above our heads as we waded into the Red Sea!
The primary beneficiary of the ride is the Arava Institute - a premier environmental teaching and research graduate program in the Middle East, preparing future Arab and Jewish leaders to cooperatively solve the region’s environmental challenges. Together, faculty and students – Israeli, Palestinian, Jordanian, and international – are advancing a critical common cause: a sustainable future for the region’s human and natural resources. Building peaceful bridges one graduate student at a time, they nurture deep respect for the “other” through a commitment to the environment. Their motto is “Nature Knows No Borders.”
Established in 1996, the Arava Institute is a non-profit organization located on Kibbutz Ketura in Israel’s Arava Valley in the Negev desert. The Arava Institute is a unique oasis of environmental education, research, and international cooperation.
The ride was also sponsored by Hazon which in Hebrew means “vision.” As America’s largest Jewish environmental organization, it creates healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond.
